Australian aviation is undergoing significant change and innovation, where Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vehicles are rapidly emerging. These aircraft will be used for a wide range of applications, from last-mile transportation of freight, provision of communication services to regional areas, to helping fight bushfires. The potential social, economic and environmental benefits are vast. These new aircraft will utilise airspace in fundamentally new ways at a number, scale and level of complexity that our existing airspace operational concept was never envisaged to manage. Consequently, there are significant challenges that need to be addressed before such users can routinely takes to Australian skies.
The UUI Working Group has been stablished under ASTRA to further the safe and efficient integration of new airspace users.
